Narrated by Hadrat Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be well pleased with him): The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to visit me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage due to a severe illness that had afflicted me. I submitted, 'My illness has become very severe and I am a man of wealth, and no one inherits from me except a daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my property in charity?' He stated, 'No.' I submitted, 'Half?' He stated, 'No.' Then he stated, 'One-third, and one-third is large — or much. Indeed, for you to leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them destitute, begging from people. You will not spend anything seeking the pleasure of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you place in your wife's mouth.' I submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! Shall I be left behind after my companions (have departed Makkah)?' He stated, 'You will live on and whatever good deeds you do will raise you in rank and elevation. Perhaps you will live long enough that some people will benefit from you while others will be harmed by you. O Allah! Complete the emigration of my companions for them and do not turn them back on their heels.' But the unfortunate one was Sa'd bin Khawla — the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) felt grieved for him because he had died in Makkah.

ہم سے عبداللہ بن یوسف تنیسی نے بیان کیا، ہمیں امام مالک رحمۃ اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ نے خبر دی، ان سے ابن شہاب (زہری) نے، ان سے عامر بن حضرت سعد بن ابی وقاص نے اور ان سے ان کے والد حضرت سعد بن ابی وقاص رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا کہ حجۃ الوداع کے سال (10 ہجری) رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم میری عیادت کے لیے تشریف لائے، میری بیماری بہت شدید ہو گئی تھی۔ میں نے عرض کیا: میرا مرض بہت بڑھ گیا ہے اور میرے پاس مال بہت ہے اور میری صرف ایک بیٹی وارث ہے۔ تو کیا میں اپنے دو تہائی مال کو صدقہ کر دوں؟ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: نہیں۔ میں نے عرض کیا: آدھا؟ فرمایا: نہیں۔ پھر ارشاد فرمایا: تہائی (کافی ہے) اور تہائی بھی بہت ہے — یا بڑا ہے۔ تم اپنے وارثوں کو مالدار چھوڑ کر جاؤ تو یہ اس سے بہتر ہے کہ انہیں محتاج چھوڑو کہ وہ لوگوں کے سامنے ہاتھ پھیلاتے پھریں۔ اور تم جو کچھ بھی اللہ کی رضا کے لیے خرچ کرو گے اس پر تمہیں اجر ملے گا، حتیٰ کہ اس لقمے پر بھی جو تم اپنی بیوی کے منہ میں رکھو۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! کیا میں اپنے ساتھیوں کے بعد (مکہ میں) رہ جاؤں گا؟ ارشاد فرمایا: تم (ابھی) زندہ رہو گے اور جو نیک عمل بھی کرو گے اس سے تمہارے درجات بلند ہوتے رہیں گے۔ اور شاید تم اتنی عمر پاؤ کہ بہت سے لوگوں (مسلمانوں) کو تم سے فائدہ پہنچے اور بہتوں (کفار اور مرتدین) کو نقصان۔ اے اللہ! میرے ساتھیوں کو ہجرت پر استقامت عطا فرما اور انہیں پیٹھ دکھا کر نہ لوٹا۔ البتہ مصیبت زدہ سعد بن خولہ ہیں — رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ان پر (اس وجہ سے) رحم فرمایا کہ ان کا مکہ میں انتقال ہو گیا تھا۔
