Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated through Ibn Abbas: When the Prophet of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) withdrew from his wives, I entered the mosque and the people were striking pebbles on the ground saying: "The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has divorced his wives." This was before the command for the veil was revealed. Umar said: I will find out about this today. So I went to Aisha and said: O daughter of Abu Bakr, have you gone so far as to cause hurt to Allah and His Messenger? She said: What have I to do with you, O son of Khattab? Mind your own affairs. Then I went to Hafsah and said: O Hafsah, have you gone so far as to cause hurt to Allah and His Messenger? I know that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) does not love you, and were it not for me, he would have divorced you. She wept intensely. Then I asked where the Beloved Messenger of Allah was, and she said he was in his upper room. I went and found Rabah, his servant, sitting at the threshold. I called out and eventually was permitted to enter. I found the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) lying on a mat with marks on his side, wearing only a lower garment. I looked at his provisions and found only a handful of barley and some tanning material. My eyes filled with tears. He asked: "What makes you weep, O son of Khattab?" I said: How can I not weep when this mat has left marks on your side, and this is all your provision, while Caesar and Chosroes have fruits and rivers? He stated: "O son of Khattab, are you not content that the Hereafter be for us and the worldly life for them?" I asked if he had divorced his wives. He said: "No." I asked permission to go tell them, and he permitted me. He had not divorced them but only withdrawn for twenty-nine days. Then Allah revealed the verse of choice.

حضرت عمر بن الخطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے ابن عباس کے واسطے سے روایت ہے: جب نبی اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنی ازواج سے علیحدگی اختیار فرمائی تو میں مسجد میں داخل ہوا۔ لوگ کنکریاں مار رہے تھے اور کہہ رہے تھے: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اپنی بیویوں کو طلاق دے دی ہے — یہ حکمِ حجاب سے پہلے کی بات ہے۔ عمر نے کہا: آج میں ضرور معلوم کروں گا۔ میں عائشہ کے پاس گیا اور کہا: اے ابوبکر کی بیٹی، کیا تمہارا معاملہ یہاں تک پہنچ گیا کہ اللہ اور اس کے رسول کو تکلیف دو؟ انہوں نے کہا: مجھے تم سے کیا واسطہ اے ابن الخطاب، تم اپنے معاملے دیکھو۔ پھر میں حفصہ کے پاس گیا اور کہا: اے حفصہ، کیا تمہارا معاملہ یہاں تک پہنچ گیا؟ میں جانتا ہوں کہ رسول اللہ تم سے محبت نہیں فرماتے اور اگر میں نہ ہوتا تو آپ تمہیں طلاق دے چکے ہوتے۔ وہ بہت رو پڑیں۔ میں نے پوچھا رسول اللہ کہاں ہیں؟ کہا: اپنے بالاخانے میں۔ میں گیا تو ربا حضور کے غلام دہلیز پر بیٹھے تھے۔ آخر مجھے اجازت ملی۔ آپ چٹائی پر لیٹے تھے جس کے نشان پہلو میں تھے، صرف ایک تہبند تھا۔ میں نے آپ کے ذخیرے کو دیکھا تو ایک مٹھی جو اور تھوڑا سا چمڑا تھا۔ میری آنکھوں سے آنسو بہہ پڑے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: اے ابن الخطاب، تمہیں کس چیز نے رلایا؟ میں نے کہا: میں کیوں نہ روؤں جبکہ چٹائی کے نشان آپ کے پہلو میں ہیں اور یہ آپ کا ذخیرہ ہے جبکہ قیصر و کسریٰ پھلوں اور نہروں میں ہیں؟ آپ نے ارشاد فرمایا: اے ابن الخطاب، کیا تم راضی نہیں کہ آخرت ہماری ہو اور دنیا ان کی ہو؟ میں نے پوچھا: کیا آپ نے طلاق دے دی؟ فرمایا: نہیں۔ میں نے اجازت مانگی لوگوں کو بتانے کی، آپ نے اجازت دی۔ آپ نے طلاق نہیں دی تھی بلکہ صرف انتیس دن علیحدگی اختیار فرمائی تھی۔ پھر اللہ نے آیتِ تخییر نازل فرمائی۔
