Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrated: I was always keen to ask Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) about the two wives of the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about whom Allah said: {If you two repent to Allah, your hearts have indeed inclined}. When he went for Hajj, I went with him. He stepped aside (to relieve himself) and I went with him carrying a water vessel. When he came back, I poured water on his hands and he performed ablution. I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, who are the two wives of the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about whom Allah said: {If you two repent to Allah, your hearts have indeed inclined}?" Umar said: "How strange of you, O Ibn Abbas! They are Hafsah and Aisha." Then Umar began narrating the long hadith about his neighbor from the Ansar, about taking turns visiting the Prophet, about Qurayshi men being dominant over women until the Ansari women influenced their wives, about Umar's conversation with Hafsah warning her, about the rumor of the Prophet divorcing his wives, Umar visiting the Prophet in his upper room, finding him lying on a mat with marks on his side, the meager provisions in his room, Umar weeping, and the Prophet saying: "O Ibn al-Khattab, are you not content that the Hereafter be for us and the worldly life for them?"

حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے: میں ہمیشہ اس بات کا حریص رہا کہ حضرت عمر بن الخطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی ان دو ازواج کے بارے میں پوچھوں جن کے بارے میں اللہ تعالیٰ نے فرمایا: {اگر تم دونوں اللہ کی طرف توبہ کرو تو بلاشبہ تمہارے دل جھک چکے ہیں}۔ یہاں تک کہ جب انہوں نے حج کیا تو میں نے بھی ان کے ساتھ حج کیا۔ وہ ایک طرف ہٹے تو میں بھی ان کے ساتھ ایک برتن لے کر چلا۔ جب واپس آئے تو میں نے ان کے ہاتھوں پر پانی ڈالا اور انہوں نے وضو کیا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: اے امیر المؤمنین، نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی وہ دو بیویاں کون ہیں جن کے بارے میں اللہ نے فرمایا: {اگر تم دونوں اللہ کی طرف توبہ کرو تو بلاشبہ تمہارے دل جھک چکے ہیں}؟ حضرت عمر نے کہا: ابن عباس! تم پر تعجب ہے، وہ حفصہ اور عائشہ ہیں۔ پھر حضرت عمر نے تفصیلی حدیث بیان فرمائی - اپنے انصاری پڑوسی کے بارے میں، نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس باری باری آنے کے بارے میں، قریشی مردوں کا عورتوں پر غالب ہونے اور انصاری عورتوں کا اثر قبول کرنے کے بارے میں، حضرت عمر کی حفصہ کو نصیحت، آپ کے ازواج کو طلاق دینے کی افواہ، حضرت عمر کا آپ کے بالاخانے میں جانا، آپ کو چٹائی پر لیٹے پانا جس کے نشان آپ کے پہلو میں تھے، کمرے میں معمولی سامان دیکھنا، عمر کا رونا، اور آپ کا ارشاد فرمانا: اے ابن الخطاب! کیا تم اس بات پر راضی نہیں کہ آخرت ہمارے لیے ہو اور دنیا ان کے لیے ہو؟
