Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Shabbuwayh al-Marwazi and Ibrahim ibn Abdullah ibn al-Junayd narrated to us, they said: 'Umar ibn Hafs ibn Ghiyath informed us, he said: My father informed us, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq, from Yazid ibn al-Hakam - who is the nephew of 'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As - from 'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'He has indeed shielded himself with a thick shield from the Fire, the one who has had three children pass away before him in Islam.' We do not know of any route for this hadith from 'Uthman except this one, and this wording is not preserved from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) except through this route with this chain, although a similar meaning has been narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) through various routes. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq is a Kufan known as Abu Shaybah; Marwan ibn Mu'awiyah, Muhammad ibn Fudayl, al-Qasim ibn Malik, 'Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad, Hafs ibn Ghiyath, and others narrated from him. His hadith is not that of a precise memorizer, but his hadiths have been accepted.
