Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Balawayh and Abu Bakr ibn Ja'far informed us, they said: Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to me, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, Mu'awiyah — meaning ibn Salih — narrated to us from Rabi'ah — meaning ibn Yazid — from Abu Idris al-Khawlani. He said: And Abu Uthman narrated to me from Jubayr ibn Nufayr from Uqbah ibn Amir who said: We used to tend the camels. When my turn came, I brought them in the evening and found the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) standing, addressing the people. I caught his words: 'There is no Muslim who performs ablution well, then stands and prays two rak'ahs, devoting his heart and face to them, except that Paradise becomes incumbent upon him.' I said: How excellent is this! A speaker in front of me said: The one before it is even better. I looked, and it was Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I saw you just came. He said: 'There is none among you who performs ablution, then says: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, except that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for him; he enters from whichever of them he wills.'
