Abu al-Nadr told us: Hariz told us, from Yazid ibn Sulayh, from Dhu Mikhmar, who was a man from Abyssinia who served the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: We were with him on a journey, and he hastened the pace when he set out, and he used to do that because of scarcity of provisions. A speaker said to him: O Messenger of Allah, the people have fallen behind you. So he halted, and the people halted with him until they all caught up to him. He said to them: Would you like us to take a rest? Or a speaker said that to him. So he dismounted and they dismounted, and he said: Who will keep watch for us tonight? I said: I will, may Allah make me your ransom. So he gave me the halter of his she-camel and said: Take it, do not be a fool. He said: So I took the halter of the Messenger of Allah's she-camel, peace and blessings be upon him, and the halter of my own camel, and I withdrew a short distance and let them go free to graze, and I kept watching them thus until sleep overtook me, and I was unaware of anything until I felt the heat of the sun on my face. I woke up and looked right and left, and there were the two mounts not far from me. So I took the halter of the Prophet's she-camel, peace and blessings be upon him, and the halter of my own camel, and I came to the nearest of the people and woke him and said to him: Have you prayed? He said: No. So the people woke one another until the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, woke up. He said: O Bilal, do I have any water in the water-skin - meaning the vessel? He said: Yes, may Allah make me your ransom. So he brought him water for ablution, and he performed ablution without wetting the dust with it much. Then he ordered Bilal, who gave the call to prayer. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stood and prayed the two rak'ahs before dawn, without hurrying, then he ordered him and he called the iqamah, and he prayed, without hurrying. A speaker said to him: O Prophet of Allah, have we neglected the prayer? He said: No. Allah, Mighty and Sublime, took our souls, and He has returned them to us, and we have prayed.
