English Translation
Rafi' ibn Khadij was struck on the Day of Uhud or the Day of Khaybar — 'Amr was unsure — by an arrow in his chest. He came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, remove the arrow." He said: "O Rafi', if you wish, I will remove the arrow and the arrowhead together. And if you wish, I will remove the arrow and leave the arrowhead, and I will testify for you on the Day of Resurrection that you are a martyr." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) removed the arrow and left the arrowhead. He lived with it until the caliphate of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), when the wound reopened and he died after 'Asr. Ibn 'Umar was told: "O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, Rafi' ibn Khadij has died." He invoked mercy upon him and said: "The likes of Rafi' should not be taken out for burial until the villages around Madinah are notified." When the funeral procession went out and the prayer was offered, Ibn 'Umar came and sat at the head of the grave. A freed woman of theirs wailed, and Ibn 'Umar said: "Who will restrain this foolish woman? Do not disturb the elder, for he will not be punished by Allah because of her."
