English Translation
Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Azdi narrated to us: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us: Al-Makhzumi al-Mughirah ibn Salamah narrated to us: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Umar ibn Abi Salamah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said: 'There was a man who used to lend money to people among the Children of Israel. A man came to him and said: O so-and-so, lend me six hundred dinars. He said: Yes, if you bring me a guarantor. He said: Allah is my guarantor. He said: Glory be to Allah! Yes, I accept Allah as a guarantor. So he gave him six hundred dinars and set a deadline for him. He crossed the sea with the money to trade with it. Allah decreed that the deadline came and the sea raged between them. The owner of the money kept coming to the shore asking about him. Those he asked about him said: We left him at such and such a place. The owner of the money said: O Allah, be my substitute for so-and-so in what I gave him through You. The one who owed the money went and carved out a piece of wood and placed the money inside it, then wrote a letter: From so-and-so to so-and-so - I have paid your money to my guarantor. Then he sealed the opening of the wood and threw it into the expanse of the sea. It kept going until it threw it to the shore. The owner of the money went to the shore and searched. He found the wood, so he carried it and took it to his family and said: Burn this. They broke it and the dinars and the letter scattered. He took it and read it and recognized it. The other man came forward and the owner of the money said to him: Where is my money? He said: I have already paid my money to my guarantor, to the One who guarantees for me. He said to him: Your guarantor has fulfilled it for you.' Abu Hurayrah said: 'We used to dispute and argue much among ourselves before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about which of them had more faith.'
