Hadrat Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared on the day of Khaybar: Tomorrow I shall give this flag to a man through whose hands Allah the Exalted will grant victory. He loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. The people spent the night wondering about it. When morning came, they all presented themselves before him, each hoping it would be given to him. He declared: Where is Hadrat Ali bin Abi Talib? It was submitted: He has trouble in his eyes. He applied his blessed saliva to his eyes and prayed for him, and he was completely cured. He bestowed the flag upon him. Hadrat Ali (may Allah ennoble his countenance) submitted: O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! Shall I fight them until they become like us (i.e., embrace Islam)? He declared: Advance slowly until you descend in their territory, then invite them to Islam and inform them of their rights. By Allah! If Allah the Exalted guides even one person through you, it is better for you than red camels (i.e., the most precious wealth).'
Urdu Translation
حضرت سہل بن سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے خیبر کے دن ارشاد فرمایا: کل میں یہ جھنڈا ایسے شخص کو دوں گا جس کے ہاتھ پر اللہ تعالیٰ فتح عطا فرمائے گا۔ وہ اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت رکھتا ہے اور اللہ اور اس کا رسول اس سے محبت فرماتے ہیں۔ لوگوں نے رات بھر اس بارے میں سوچا۔ صبح ہوئی تو سب آپ کے پاس حاضر ہوئے، ہر ایک کو امید تھی کہ اسے ملے گا۔ ارشاد فرمایا: علی بن ابی طالب کہاں ہے؟ عرض کیا گیا: ان کی آنکھوں میں تکلیف ہے۔ آپ نے ان کی آنکھوں میں اپنا لعاب دہن لگایا اور ان کے لیے دعا فرمائی تو وہ بالکل تندرست ہو گئے۔ آپ نے جھنڈا انہیں عنایت فرمایا۔ حضرت علی (المرتضیٰ کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم) نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! کیا میں ان سے جنگ کروں یہاں تک کہ وہ ہمارے جیسے ہو جائیں (یعنی مسلمان ہو جائیں)؟ ارشاد فرمایا: آہستہ آہستہ چلو یہاں تک کہ ان کے میدان میں اترو، پھر انہیں اسلام کی دعوت دو اور ان کے حقوق بتاؤ۔ اللہ کی قسم! اگر اللہ تعالیٰ تمہارے ذریعے ایک شخص کو بھی ہدایت دے تو یہ تمہارے لیے سرخ اونٹوں (یعنی قیمتی مال) سے بہتر ہے۔
