Arabic (Original)
حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ مُرَّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِجَنَازَةٍ، فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا خَيْرًا فَقَالَ " وَجَبَتْ ". ثُمَّ مُرَّ بِأُخْرَى فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهَا شَرًّا ـ أَوْ قَالَ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ ـ فَقَالَ " وَجَبَتْ ". فَقِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قُلْتَ لِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ، وَلِهَذَا وَجَبَتْ، قَالَ " شَهَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ، الْمُؤْمِنُونَ شُهَدَاءُ اللَّهِ فِي الأَرْضِ ".
English Translation
Narrated to us by Sulayman bin Harb, narrated to us by Hammad bin Zaid, from Thabit, that Hadrat Anas (may Allah be well pleased with him) stated, 'A funeral passed by the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and the people praised the deceased.' He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, 'It has become obligatory (i.e., Paradise has become obligatory).' Then another funeral passed and they spoke ill of the deceased, or said something else. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, 'It has become obligatory (i.e., Hell has become obligatory).' It was submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! You said "obligatory" for this one and "obligatory" for that one?' He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared, 'The testimony of the people (is accepted); the believers are the witnesses of Allah Almighty on earth.'
Urdu Translation
ہم سے سلیمان بن حرب نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے حماد بن زید نے بیان کیا، ثابت سے، حضرت انس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے سامنے سے ایک جنازہ گزرا۔ لوگوں نے اس (میت) کی تعریف کی۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: واجب ہو گئی (یعنی جنت واجب ہو گئی)۔ پھر ایک اور جنازہ گزرا تو لوگوں نے اس کی برائی بیان کی، یا اور کچھ کہا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: واجب ہو گئی (یعنی جہنم واجب ہو گئی)۔ عرض کیا گیا: یا رسول اللہ! آپ نے اس کے لیے بھی واجب ہو گئی فرمایا اور اس کے لیے بھی واجب ہو گئی؟ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: لوگوں کی گواہی (قبول ہے)، مومن زمین میں اللہ تعالیٰ کے گواہ ہیں۔
