English Translation
Abdullah narrated to us: Mus'ab ibn Abdullah az-Zubayri narrated to me: Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Sharik ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Numayr, from Ata' ibn Yasar, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited Surat Bara'ah (at-Tawbah) on a Friday while standing, reminding the people of the Days of Allah, and Ubayy ibn Ka'b was facing the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, along with Abu ad-Darda' and Abu Dharr. One of the two [latter] nudged Ubayy ibn Ka'b and said: "When was this surah revealed, Ubayy? I have never heard it until just now." Ubayy gestured to him to be silent. When they had finished, he said: "I asked you when this surah was revealed, and you did not tell me." Ubayy said: "You have nothing from your prayer today except the idle talk you engaged in." So he went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him, and told him what Ubayy had said. He said: "Ubayy has spoken the truth."
