English Translation
Yahya ibn Sa'id told us: 'Uthman ibn Ghiyath told us, who said: Abu Nadrah narrated to me, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: People will be presented over the bridge of Hell, upon which are thorns, hooks, and grapples that snatch people away. He said: The people will pass like lightning, others like the wind, others like a racing horse, others running, others walking, others crawling, and others dragging themselves along. As for the people of the Fire who are its permanent inhabitants, they neither die nor live; but some people will be seized for their sins and burned until they become charcoal, then God will permit intercession, and they will be found in clusters, and they will be thrown into a river, and they will sprout as a seed sprouts in the silt carried by a flood. He said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you seen the sabgha plant?" — and over the Fire are three trees; a man comes forth from the Fire and stands at its edge and says: "O Lord, turn my face away from it." He says: "By your covenant and pledge, will you not ask Me for anything else?" Then he sees a tree and says: "O Lord, bring me near this tree so I may take shelter in its shade and eat from its fruit." He says: "By your covenant and pledge, will you not ask Me for anything else?" Then he sees another tree, more beautiful than it, and says: "O Lord, move me to this tree so I may take shelter in its shade and eat from its fruit." He says: "By your covenant and pledge, will you not ask Me for anything else?" Then he sees a third tree and says the same, and is told the same. Then he sees the multitude of people and hears their voices, and says: "Lord, admit me into Paradise." He said: Abu Sa'id and another man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) differed here: one said: "So he enters Paradise and is given the world and its like along with it," and the other said: "He is made to enter Paradise and is given the world and ten times its like." Rawh told us: 'Uthman ibn Ghiyath told us: Abu Nadrah told us, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: People pass over the bridge of Hell — and he mentioned it — he said: on its two sides are angels saying: "O God, keep safe, keep safe." And he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you not seen the sabgha — a tree that grows amid flood debris?" And he said: as for the people of the Fire who are its inhabitants — and he mentioned its meaning. Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: 'Uthman ibn Ghiyath told us and dictated it to me, who said: I heard Abu Nadrah narrate from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned intercession and said: People are presented over the bridge of Hell, upon which are thorns and hooks that snatch people, and on its two sides are the angels saying: "O God, keep safe, keep safe" — and he mentioned the hadith.
