Al-Hakam ibn Nafi Abu al-Yaman narrated to us: Isma'il ibn Ayyash narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym: Isma'il ibn Ubayd al-Ansari narrated to me and mentioned the hadith, in which Ubadah said to Abu Hurayrah: O Abu Hurayrah, you were not with us when we gave the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. We pledged allegiance to him to hear and obey, in energy and in reluctance, to spend in ease and hardship, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to speak the truth concerning Allah, Blessed and Exalted, fearing no blamer's blame therein, and to support the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he came to us at Yathrib, protecting him as we protect ourselves, our wives, and our children, with Paradise as our reward. This is the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which we gave; whoever breaks it only breaks it against himself, and whoever fulfills what he pledged to the Messenger of Allah, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will fulfill for him what His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, pledged. Then Mu'awiyah wrote to Uthman ibn Affan: Ubadah ibn al-Samit has stirred up Syria and its people against me; either you restrain Ubadah to yourself, or I shall leave him free with Syria. So Uthman wrote back to him: Send Ubadah away until you return him to his home in Madinah. So he sent Ubadah away until he arrived in Madinah. He entered upon Uthman in the house, and there was no one in the house except a man among the earlier believers, or among the followers who had met the Companions. Uthman was suddenly aware of him sitting at the side of the house, so he turned to him and said: O Ubadah ibn al-Samit, what is there between us and you? So Ubadah stood up among the people and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Abu al-Qasim Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, say: After me there will be men placed in charge of your affairs who will make known to you what you deny, and deny to you what you know; so there is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah, Blessed and Exalted - so do not make excuses regarding your Lord.
