حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ دَاوُدَ عَنْ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِي ذَرٍّ قَالَ صُمْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَمَضَانَ فَلَمْ يَقُمْ بِنَا شَيْئًا مِنْ الشَّهْرِ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ لَيْلَةُ أَرْبَعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ قَامَ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا لَمْ يَقُمْ بِنَا فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ سِتٍّ وَعِشْرِينَ قَامَ بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَادَ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ شَطْرُ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ نَفَّلْتَنَا بَقِيَّةَ لَيْلَتِنَا هَذِهِ قَالَ لَا إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ إِذَا قَامَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ حُسِبَ لَهُ قِيَامُ لَيْلَةٍ فَلَمَّا كَانَتْ اللَّيْلَةُ الَّتِي تَلِيهَا لَمْ يَقُمْ بِنَا فَلَمَّا أَنْ كَانَتْ لَيْلَةُ ثَمَانٍ وَعِشْرِينَ جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَهْلَهُ وَاجْتَمَعَ لَهُ النَّاسُ فَصَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى كَادَ يَفُوتُنَا الْفَلَاحُ قَالَ قُلْتُ وَمَا الْفَلَاحُ قَالَ السُّحُورُ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَقُمْ بِنَا يَا ابْنَ أَخِي شَيْئًا مِنْ الشَّهْرِ.

Ali ibn Asim told us, from Dawud, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from Abu Dharr, who said: We fasted Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he did not lead us in night prayer at all during the month until, when it was the night of the twenty-fourth, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in prayer until nearly a third of the night had passed. Then when the following night came, he did not lead us in prayer. Then when it was the night of the twenty-sixth, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in prayer until nearly half the night had passed. I said: O Messenger of Allah, if only you had given us extra prayer for the rest of this night of ours! He said: "No. When a man prays with the imam until he finishes, it is counted for him as having prayed the whole night." Then when the following night came, he did not lead us in prayer. Then when it was the night of the twenty-eighth, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered his household, and the people gathered for him, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in prayer until we nearly missed al-falah. I said: What is al-falah? He said: "The pre-dawn meal (suhur)." Then he did not lead us in prayer at all for the rest of the month, O son of my brother.
