Affan told us: Shu'bah told us: Zubayd said: Mansur, Dawud, Ibn Awn, and Mujalid informed me, from al-Sha'bi—and this is Zubayd's version—he said: I heard al-Sha'bi narrating from al-Bara', who told us by a pillar in the mosque—he said, "Had I been there, I would have told you its exact spot"—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed us and said, "The first thing we begin with on this day of ours is that we pray, then return and sacrifice; whoever does that has followed our practice (sunnah), and whoever slaughters before that, it is merely meat he has offered to his family, having nothing to do with the sacrificial rite." He said: My maternal uncle Abu Burdah ibn Niyar had slaughtered [beforehand] and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered while I have a young goat better than an older sheep." He said, "Substitute it in its place, and it will not suffice, nor will it suffice, for anyone after you."
