Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us: Ali ibn Zayd informed us, from Adi ibn Thabit, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey, and we stopped at Ghadir Khumm. The call was made among us that the prayer was to be held in congregation, and a space was cleared for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, beneath two trees. He prayed the noon prayer, then took the hand of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, "Do you not know that I have more authority over the believers than they have over themselves?" They said, "Yes indeed." He said, "Do you not know that I have more authority over every believer than he has over himself?" They said, "Yes indeed." He said: Then he took the hand of Ali and said, "Whoever's master I am, Ali is his master. O Allah, be an ally to whoever allies with him, and be an enemy to whoever opposes him." He said: Then Umar met him after that and said, "Congratulations, O son of Abu Talib! You have become, morning and evening, the master of every believing man and woman." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Hudbah ibn Khalid told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from Ali ibn Zayd, from Adi ibn Thabit, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in like manner.
