Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn al-Minhal, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Thabit, from Anas, from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'The last person to enter Paradise will walk on the Sirat (bridge), walking at times and stumbling at times, and the Fire will singe him. When he has crossed it, he will turn back to it and say: Blessed is the One who has saved me from you. He has given me something He has not given anyone from the first or the last. Then a tree will be raised for him and he will say: O Lord, bring me close to this tree so I may take shade under it and drink from its water. Allah the Almighty will say: O son of Adam, perhaps if I give it to you, you will ask Me for something else. He will bring him close to it - and his Lord knows he will ask again - and he will take shade under it and drink from its water. Then another tree will be raised for him, more beautiful than the first, and he will say: O Lord, bring me close to it so I may take shade and drink from its water, and I will not ask You for anything else - and his Lord knows he will ask again, for he sees what he cannot resist. Allah will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise Me you would not ask for anything else? He will say: Yes, O Lord, but this one - I will not ask You for anything else. And his Lord knows he will ask again, and He excuses him because he sees what he cannot resist. Allah will say: Perhaps if I bring you close to it, you will ask Me for something else. He will promise not to, and He will bring him close to it. He will take shade under it and drink from its water. Then another tree will be raised for him near the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He will say: O Lord, bring me close to this one so I may take shade and drink from its water. Allah, glorified be His mention, will say: O son of Adam, did you not promise Me you would not ask for anything else? He will say: O Lord, this one - I will not ask You for anything else. He will say: Perhaps if I bring you close, you will ask Me for something else. He will promise not to, and his Lord knows he will ask - and He excuses him because he sees what he cannot resist. He will bring him close, and he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise. He will say: O Lord, admit me into it! He will say: O son of Adam, would you be satisfied if I gave you the world and its like with it? He will say: Are You mocking me while You are the Lord of the worlds? The Messenger of Allah laughed and said: Will you not ask me why I laughed? They said: Why did you laugh, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Because of the laughter of the Lord of the worlds, blessed and exalted, when he said: Are You mocking me while You are the Lord of the worlds? He (Allah) will say: I am not mocking you, but I have power over whatever I will.'
