Narrated Abu Malik al-Ash'ari: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, 'Indeed Allah the Exalted said: Whoever sets out going forth in My cause as a fighter, seeking My countenance, believing in My promise and having faith in My messengers, he is guaranteed by Allah either that He will take his soul in the army by whatever death He wills and admit him to Paradise, or He will return him safely to his family with whatever reward or spoils he has earned, even if his absence was long.' He also said, 'Whoever sets out in the cause of Allah and dies, is killed, has his neck broken by his horse or camel, is stung by a venomous creature, or dies on his bed by whatever death Allah wills, he is a martyr.'
