Masruq said: We asked Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) about this verse, "Do not think of those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision." So Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We asked (the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him) about this verse, and he (peace be upon him) said: "The souls of the martyrs are in the forms of green birds within lanterns that hang from the noble Throne. They roam freely wherever they wish in Paradise, then return to their lanterns. Once their Lord looked upon them and said, 'Do you desire anything?' They said, 'What could we desire now? We roam freely in Paradise wherever we wish.' The Lord, Mighty and Sublime, asked them three times. When they saw that they would not be released without asking (that is, the Lord, Majestic is His Majesty, kept asking), they said, 'O our Lord! We desire that You return our souls to our bodies (that is, to our worldly bodies), so that we may be killed again in Your way.' When their Lord saw that they had no other wish, He left them." اردو ترجمہ
مسروق کہتے ہیں کہہم نے سیدنا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما سے اس آیت”ان لوگوں کو مردہ مت سمجھو جو اللہ کی راہ میں قتل کئے گئے، بلکہ وہ اپنے رب کے پاس زندہ ہیں، روزی دئیے جاتے ہیں“کے بارے میں پوچھا، تو سیدنا عبداللہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا۔ ہم نے اس آیت کے بارے میں (رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے) پوچھا تو آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ شہیدوں کی روحیں سبز پرندوں کے قالب میں قندیلوں کے اندر ہیں، جو عرش مبارک سے لٹک رہی ہیں اور جہاں چاہتے ہیں جنت میں چگتے پھرتے ہیں، پھر اپنی قندیلوں میں آ رہتے ہیں۔ ایک دفعہ ان کے پروردگار نے ان کو دیکھا اور فرمایا کہ تم کچھ چاہتی ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ اب ہم کیا چاہیں گی؟ ہم تو جنت میں جہاں چاہتی ہیں چگتی پھرتی ہیں تو پروردگار جل وعلا نے تین دفعہ پوچھا۔ جب انہوں نے دیکھا کہ بغیر مانگے ہماری رہائی نہیں (یعنی پروردگار جل جلالہ برابر پوچھے جاتا ہے) تو انہوں نے کہا کہ اے ہمارے پروردگار! ہم یہ چاہتی ہیں کہ ہماری روحوں کو ہمارے بدنوں میں پھیر دے (یعنی دنیا کے بدنوں میں) تاکہ ہم دوبارہ تیری راہ میں مارے جائیں۔ جب ان کے رب نے دیکھا کہ اب ان کو کوئی خواہش نہیں، تو ان کو چھوڑ دیا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1068]
