Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A man from the people before you asked another to lend him a thousand dinars. The other said: 'Bring me witnesses.' He said: 'Allah is sufficient as a witness.' He said: 'Then bring me a guarantor.' He said: 'Allah is sufficient as a guarantor.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth.' So he gave him the money for a specified term. The man traveled by sea and when he had completed his business, he looked for a vessel to bring him back in time. He could not find one, so he took a piece of wood, hollowed it out, placed the thousand dinars inside it along with a letter, sealed it, and threw it into the sea, saying: 'O Allah, You know that I borrowed a thousand dinars from so-and-so, and he asked me for a guarantor and I said Allah is sufficient as a guarantor, and he was pleased with You. He asked me for a witness and I said Allah is sufficient as a witness, and he was pleased with You. I have tried to find a boat to bring me back in time but could not. I entrust this to You.' The man who had lent the money went to the shore hoping that a ship would come with his money. He found the piece of wood containing the money and took it as firewood for his family. When he split it, he found the money and the letter. Then the borrower came back and brought another thousand dinars, saying: 'By Allah, I kept trying to find a boat but could not find one before the one I came on.' The lender said: 'Did you send me anything?' He said: 'I am telling you that I could not find a boat before this one.' The lender said: 'Allah has delivered what you sent in the piece of wood on your behalf. So go with your thousand dinars, rightly guided.'"
