Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Balawayh narrated to me, Musa ibn Harun narrated to us, Hisham ibn al-Harith al-Harrani narrated to us, Ubaydullah ibn Amr al-Raqqi narrated from Ishaq ibn Rashid from al-Zuhri from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr from Abd al-Rahman ibn Hatib ibn Abi Balta'a who narrated to him that his father wrote a letter to the disbelievers of Quraysh while he was with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), having witnessed Badr. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) called Hadrat Ali (may Allah ennoble his countenance) and Hadrat al-Zubayr (may Allah be well pleased with him) and stated: "Go until you catch a woman who has a letter with her, and bring it to me." So they went until they found her and said: 'Give us the letter that is with you.' They told her that they would not leave until they searched every garment on her. She said: 'Are you not two Muslim men?' They said: 'Yes, but the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) told us that you have a letter.' When she realized she could not escape them, she untied the letter from her hair and handed it to them. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) summoned Hatib and read the letter to him and stated: "Do you recognize this letter?" He said: 'Yes.' He stated: "What made you do this?" He said: 'My children and relatives are there, and I am a foreigner among you, O Quraysh.' Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: 'Permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to kill Hatib.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "No. He has witnessed Badr, and you do not know - perhaps Allah has looked upon the people of Badr and stated: 'Do as you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"

ابو بکر محمد بن احمد بن بالویہ نے مجھے بیان کیا، موسیٰ بن ہارون نے ہمیں بیان کیا، ہشام بن الحارث حرانی نے ہمیں بیان کیا، عبید اللہ بن عمرو رقی نے اسحاق بن راشد سے، انہوں نے زہری سے، انہوں نے عروہ بن الزبیر سے، انہوں نے عبد الرحمان بن حاطب بن ابی بلتعہ سے روایت کیا کہ ان کے والد نے کفار قریش کو ایک خط لکھا جبکہ وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ تھے اور بدر میں شریک ہو چکے تھے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے حضرت علی المرتضیٰ کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم اور حضرت زبیر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کو بلایا اور ارشاد فرمایا: «جاؤ یہاں تک کہ ایک عورت کو پا لو جس کے پاس ایک خط ہے اور وہ مجھے لا دو۔» تو وہ دونوں گئے یہاں تک کہ اسے پایا اور کہا: وہ خط ہمیں دے دو جو تمہارے پاس ہے۔ انہوں نے اسے بتایا کہ وہ واپس نہیں جائیں گے جب تک تمہارا ہر کپڑا نہ اتار لیں۔ اس نے کہا: کیا تم دونوں مسلمان نہیں ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہاں، لیکن رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہمیں بتایا ہے کہ تمہارے پاس خط ہے۔ جب اسے یقین ہو گیا کہ وہ ان سے بچ نہیں سکتی تو اس نے خط اپنے سر (بالوں) سے کھولا اور ان دونوں کو دے دیا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے حاطب کو بلایا اور خط انہیں پڑھ کر سنایا اور ارشاد فرمایا: «کیا تم اس خط کو پہچانتے ہو؟» انہوں نے کہا: جی ہاں۔ ارشاد فرمایا: «تمہیں اس پر کس چیز نے آمادہ کیا؟» انہوں نے کہا: میری اولاد اور رشتہ دار وہاں ہیں اور میں تم قریش میں اجنبی آدمی ہوں۔ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! مجھے اجازت دیں کہ حاطب کو قتل کر دوں۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: «نہیں، انہوں نے بدر میں شرکت کی ہے اور تمہیں معلوم نہیں شاید اللہ نے اہل بدر پر نظر فرمائی اور فرمایا: جو چاہو کرو، میں نے تمہیں معاف کر دیا۔»
