Hadrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be well pleased with them both) narrates that when the delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), he asked: Who are these people, or which delegation is this? They replied: From the tribe of Rabi'a. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared: Welcome to the people — or the delegation — who shall neither be disgraced nor regretful. They submitted: O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), we can only come to you in the sacred months, for between us and you lies this tribe of the disbelievers of Mudar. So command us with a decisive command that we may convey to those we have left behind and enter Paradise thereby. And they asked him about beverages. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things. He commanded them to believe in Allah alone and asked: Do you know what believing in Allah alone means? They said: Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) know best. He declared: To bear witness that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), to establish the prayer, to pay the Zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to pay one-fifth of the spoils of war. And he forbade them from four: the Hantam (green-glazed jars), the Dubba (gourd vessels), the Naqir (hollowed-out tree trunks), and the Muzaffat (pitch-coated vessels) — and sometimes he said al-Muqayyar (tar-coated vessels). He declared: Memorise these and convey them to those you have left behind.

حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما فرماتے ہیں کہ جب عبدالقیس کا وفد نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے دریافت فرمایا: یہ قوم کون ہے یا یہ وفد کہاں سے ہے؟ انہوں نے عرض کیا: ربیعہ کے لوگ ہیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: خوش آمدید اس قوم یا اس وفد کو! نہ رسوا ہونے والے نہ شرمندہ ہونے والے۔ انہوں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! ہم آپ کی خدمت میں حرام مہینوں ہی میں آ سکتے ہیں کیونکہ ہمارے اور آپ کے درمیان کفارِ مضر کا قبیلہ ہے۔ پس ہمیں ایسی واضح بات بتائیے جو ہم اپنے پیچھے والوں کو بھی بتا دیں اور اس پر عمل کر کے جنت میں داخل ہو جائیں۔ اور انہوں نے مشروبات کے بارے میں بھی پوچھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے انہیں چار باتوں کا حکم دیا اور چار چیزوں سے منع فرمایا۔ اکیلے اللہ تعالیٰ پر ایمان لانے کا حکم دیا اور فرمایا: جانتے ہو اکیلے اللہ پر ایمان لانا کیا ہے؟ انہوں نے عرض کیا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: اس بات کی گواہی دینا کہ اللہ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اللہ کے رسول ہیں، نماز قائم کرنا، زکوٰۃ ادا کرنا، رمضان کے روزے رکھنا اور مالِ غنیمت سے خمس ادا کرنا۔ اور چار چیزوں سے منع فرمایا: حنتم (سبز مرتبان)، دُبّاء (کدو کے برتن)، نقیر (کھودی ہوئی لکڑی کے برتن) اور مُزَفَّت (روغنی برتن) سے۔ اور بعض اوقات مُقَیَّر (تارکول والے برتن) کا لفظ فرمایا۔ اور ارشاد فرمایا: ان باتوں کو یاد رکھو اور اپنے پیچھے والوں کو بھی پہنچاؤ۔
