It is narrated by Hadrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be well pleased with them both) who said, "The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was informed about my fasting (that I was fasting continuously). He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to me and I laid a leather cushion filled with palm fiber for him, but the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sat on the ground, and the cushion remained between me and him. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, 'Is it not sufficient for you to fast three days every month?' I submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! (Increase it for me).' He said, 'Five days then.' I submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! (More).' He said, 'Seven.' I submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! (I have more strength).' He said, 'Nine.' I submitted, 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! (More).' He said, 'Eleven.' Then the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) declared, 'There is no fast greater than that of the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) Dawud (upon him be peace) — half the time. Fast one day and leave one day.'"

ہم سے اسحاق واسطی نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے خالد نے بیان کیا، ان سے خالد حذاء نے اور ان سے ابوقلابہ نے فرمایا کہ مجھے ابوملیح نے خبر دی، فرمایا کہ میں آپ کے والد کے ساتھ حضرت عبداللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا۔ انہوں نے فرمایا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو میرے روزے کے متعلق خبر ہو گئی (کہ میں مسلسل روزے رکھتا ہوں)۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم میرے یہاں تشریف لائے اور میں نے ایک چمڑے کا تکیہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے لیے بچھایا جس میں کھجور کی چھال بھری ہوئی تھی، لیکن نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم زمین پر تشریف فرما ہو گئے اور تکیہ میرے اور آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے درمیان رہ گیا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: کیا تمہارے لیے ہر مہینے میں تین دن کے روزے کافی نہیں ہیں؟ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! (کچھ اور بڑھا دیجیے)۔ فرمایا: اچھا پانچ دن۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! (کچھ اور)۔ فرمایا: سات۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! (مجھ میں اس سے بھی زیادہ کی طاقت ہے)۔ فرمایا: نو۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! (کچھ اور)۔ فرمایا: اچھا گیارہ۔ آخر نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: حضرت داؤد علیہ السلام کے روزے سے بڑھ کر کوئی روزہ نہیں ہے، یعنی زندگی کے آدھے دنوں میں (ایک دن روزہ رکھو اور ایک دن چھوڑ دیا کرو)۔
