حَدَّثنا عُمَر بن الخطاب قَال حَدَّثنا أَبُو اليمان قَال حَدَّثنا شعيب يعني ابن أبي حمزة عَن الزُّهْرِيّ عَن سَعِيد بن الْمُسَيَّب وَأَبي سَلَمة بن عَبد الرحمن عَن أبي هُرَيرة قال إنكم تقولون إن أبا هُرَيرة يكثر الْحَدِيثَ عَن النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم وتقولون ما للمهاجرين والأنصار لا يحدثون عَن النَّبِيّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وَسَلَّم مثل حديث أبي هُرَيرة وإن إخواني من المهاجرين كان يشغلهم الصفق في الأسواق وَكان يشغل إخواني من الأنصار عمل أموالهم وكنت امرءا مسكينًا من مساكين الصفة أخدم رسول الله على ملء بطني فأحضر حين يغيبون وأذكر حين ينسون وَقال لي في حديث يحدثه إنه ليس أحد يبسط ثوبه حتى أقضي مقالتي هذه ثُمَّ يجمع إليه ثوبه إلاَّ وعى ما أقول فبسطت نمرة علي حتى إذا قضى النَّبِيّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وَسَلَّم جمعتها إلى صدري فما نسيت من مقالة رسول الله تلك شيئاوَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ عَن الزُّهْرِيّ عَن سَعِيد وَأَبي سَلَمة إلاَّ شعيب بن أبي حمزة والأنصار لا يحدثون عَن النَّبِيّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وَسَلَّم مثل حديث أبي هُرَيرة وإن إخواني من المهاجرين كان يشغلهم الصفق في الأسواق وَكان يشغل إخواني من الأنصار عمل أموالهم وكنت امرءا مسكينًا من مساكين الصفة أخدم رسول الله على ملء بطني فأحضر حين يغيبون وأذكر حين ينسون وَقال لي في حديث يحدثه إنه ليس أحد يبسط ثوبه حتى أقضي مقالتي هذه ثُمَّ يجمع إليه ثوبه إلاَّ وعى ما أقول فبسطت نمرة علي حتى إذا قضى النَّبِيّ صَلَّى الله عَلَيه وَسَلَّم جمعتها إلى صدري فما نسيت من مقالة رسول الله تلك شيئاوَهَذَا الْحَدِيثُ لا نَعْلَمُ رَوَاهُ عَن الزُّهْرِيّ عَن سَعِيد وَأَبي سَلَمة إلاَّ شعيب بن أبي حمزة

Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated to us, he said: Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, he said: Shu'ayb — meaning Ibn Abi Hamzah — narrated to us, from az-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib and Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Hadrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: "You say that Abu Hurairah narrates too many hadiths from the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and you say: Why do the Muhajirun and the Ansar not narrate from the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) as Abu Hurairah does? Indeed, my brothers from the Muhajirun were occupied with trading in the markets, and my brothers from the Ansar were occupied with tending their properties. I was a poor man from the people of the Suffah, serving the Messenger of Allah in exchange for filling my stomach. So I was present when they were absent, and I remembered when they forgot. He said to me in a hadith he narrated: 'No one spreads out his garment until I finish my words, then gathers his garment to himself, except that he will retain what I say.' So I spread out my striped garment, and when the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had finished, I gathered it to my chest, and I never forgot anything from those words of the Messenger of Allah." This hadith is not known to us from anyone narrating it from az-Zuhri from Sa'id and Abu Salamah except Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah.
