سَمِعْتُ عَمْرو بْنَ عَلِيٍّ يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ كَثِيرٍ يَقُولُ حَدَّثنا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ عَنْ عَبد اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيدة عَن أَبيهِ رَضِي اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم يَوْمًا بِأَصْحَابِهِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتُمْ صَلاتِي قَالُوا مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ قَالَ قَدْ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَذَا إِنَّ مِنْ حُسْنِ صَلاةِ الْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَحْفَظَ قِرَاءَةَ الإِمَامِقَالَ عَمْرو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ فَلَمْ أُحَدّثْ بِهِ وَلَمْ أُحَدّثْ بِهِ عَنْ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ وَلَمْ أَكْتُبْهُقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأنا فَلَمْ أَكْتُبْهُ إِنَّمَا حَفِظْتُهُ عَنْ عَمْرو بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ولاَ نَعْلَمُ يُرْوَى هَذَا الْكَلامُ عَنِ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم إلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الوجه وَسَلَّم يَوْمًا بِأَصْحَابِهِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ كَيْفَ رَأَيْتُمْ صَلاتِي قَالُوا مَا أَحْسَنَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ قَالَ قَدْ نَسِيتُ آيَةَ كَذَا إِنَّ مِنْ حُسْنِ صَلاةِ الْمَرْءِ أَنْ يَحْفَظَ قِرَاءَةَ الإِمَامِقَالَ عَمْرو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ فَلَمْ أُحَدّثْ بِهِ وَلَمْ أُحَدّثْ بِهِ عَنْ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ وَلَمْ أَكْتُبْهُقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَأنا فَلَمْ أَكْتُبْهُ إِنَّمَا حَفِظْتُهُ عَنْ عَمْرو بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ولاَ نَعْلَمُ يُرْوَى هَذَا الْكَلامُ عَنِ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم إلاَّ مِنْ هَذَا الوجه

I heard Amr ibn Ali say: I heard Yahya ibn Kathir say: Al-Jurayri narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Burayda from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led his companions in prayer one day. When he finished, he said: "How did you find my prayer?" They said: "How excellent your prayer was." He said: "I forgot such-and-such a verse. Indeed, part of the excellence of a person's prayer is that he remembers the recitation of the imam." Amr ibn Ali said: I did not narrate it, and I did not narrate from this man, and I did not write it down. Abu Bakr said: And I did not write it down either; I only memorized it from Amr ibn Ali. We do not know this statement to be narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) except through this route.
