And Salamah ibn Shabib and al-Husayn ibn Mahdi narrated to us - the wording is Salamah's - they said: 'Abd al-Razzaq informed us, he said: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, that Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode a donkey with a saddle-cloth beneath which was a Fadaki blanket, and he seated me behind him. He was visiting Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah among Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj, and that was before the Battle of Badr. He passed by a gathering that included a mix of Muslims, polytheist idol-worshippers, and Jews, among whom was 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. In the gathering was also 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah. When the dust of the riding animal covered the gathering, 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said: 'Do not raise dust over us.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted them, then stopped, dismounted, and invited them to Allah, and recited the Qur'an to them. 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy said to him: 'O man, there is nothing better than what you say, if it is true. But do not disturb us in our gatherings. Go back to your camp, and whoever comes to you from us, tell him your message.' 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: 'Rather, come to us in our gatherings, for we love that.' The Muslims, polytheists, and Jews began to insult each other until they nearly attacked one another. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) kept calming them down. Then he rode his mount until he came to Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah and said: 'O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab - meaning 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy - said? He said such and such.' Sa'd said: 'Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah, and overlook it. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you. The people of this town had agreed to crown him and bind him with the headband (of leadership). When Allah rejected that with the truth He gave you, he choked on it, and that is why he did what you saw.' So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pardoned him. This hadith has been narrated from al-Zuhri from 'Urwah by Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah, and 'Abdullah ibn Abi 'Atiq, all of them narrating it from al-Zuhri from 'Urwah from Usamah. We do not know of this report being narrated with a connected chain from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except through the hadith of al-Zuhri from 'Urwah from Usamah.
