Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us... from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led us in one of the afternoon prayers — Dhuhr or Asr — and prayed two rak'ahs with us, then gave the salutation, then went to a wooden post at the front of the mosque and placed his hands on it, one over the other, with anger visible on his face. Then the quick ones among the people went out saying: The prayer has been shortened! Among the people were Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), but they were too awed to speak to him. A man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to call Dhul-Yadayn stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, did you forget or has the prayer been shortened? He said: I did not forget and the prayer has not been shortened. He said: Rather, you forgot, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned to the people and said: Is Dhul-Yadayn speaking the truth? They nodded, meaning yes. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned to his place and prayed the remaining two rak'ahs, then gave the salutation, then said Allahu Akbar and prostrated like his normal prostration or longer, then raised his head and said Allahu Akbar, then said Allahu Akbar and prostrated like his normal prostration or longer, then raised his head and said Allahu Akbar.' It was said to Muhammad: Did he give salutation in the forgetfulness prostration? He said: I did not memorize it from Abu Hurayrah, but I was told that Imran ibn Husayn said: Then he gave the salutation. Abu Dawud said: No one mentioned 'they nodded' except Hammad ibn Zayd. The Shaykh said: It only reached us through Abu Dawud from Muhammad ibn Ubayd from Hammad ibn Zayd, and they are trustworthy imams.
