Hanzalah ibn Khuwaylid al-Anbari said: I went out with Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) until he reached the gateway of the market. He faced it and said: I ask You for its good and the good of its people, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of its people. Then he walked until he reached the steps of the mosque, where he heard a man swearing by a surah of the Quran. He said: O Hanzalah, do you think this man will make expiation for his oath? Every verse is an expiation - or he said, an oath.
