Abu Tahir al-Faqih informed us, from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan, from Abu al-Azhar, from Marwan ibn Muhammad, from Mu'awiyah ibn Sallam; and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us — and the wording is his — from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Salamah al-Anazi, from Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, from Abu Tawbah al-Rabi' ibn Nafi' al-Halabi, from Mu'awiyah ibn Sallam, from Zayd ibn Sallam, from Abu Kabshah al-Saluli, who heard Sahl ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) mention that they marched with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on the day of Hunayn. They traveled a long time until evening, when the time of prayer arrived. A horseman came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I went ahead and climbed such-and-such a mountain, and found Hawazin gathered at Hunayn with all their families, livestock, and sheep. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) smiled and said: That will be the spoils of the Muslims tomorrow, God willing. Then he said: Who will guard us tonight? Anas ibn Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will, O Messenger of Allah. He said: Mount up. He mounted his horse and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who told him: Go toward this mountain pass until you reach its summit, and let us not be taken by surprise from your direction tonight. In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went to his prayer place, prayed two rak'ahs, then asked: Have you seen your horseman? A man said: We have not. He called for prayer, and while praying, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) kept looking toward the mountain pass. When he finished and gave salams, he said: Rejoice, for your horseman has come! We looked through the trees and saw him coming until he stopped before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), greeted him, and said: I went to the top of this pass as the Messenger of Allah commanded. At dawn, I surveyed both passes and saw no one. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked: Did you dismount during the night? He said: No, except to pray or to relieve myself. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: You have earned your reward — it does not matter if you do no other deed after this.
