Abdur-Razzaq told us: I heard Ubaydullah ibn Umar and Abdul-Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad relating, from Nafi', who said: Ibn Umar set out intending to perform Hajj at the time when al-Hajjaj besieged Ibn az-Zubayr. It was said to him: There is fighting occurring among the people, and we fear that they may block your way. He said: {Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example} - in that case I will do as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did; I call you to witness that I have made Umrah obligatory upon myself. Then he set out, and when he was at the back of al-Bayda', he said: There is no difference between Umrah and Hajj except that they are one and the same; I call you to witness that I have made Hajj obligatory upon myself along with my Umrah. And he sent a sacrificial animal which he had bought at Qudayd. Then he proceeded until he arrived at Makkah, and circumambulated the House and went between as-Safa and al-Marwah, without doing more than that; he did not sacrifice, nor shave, nor shorten his hair, nor did he release himself from anything he had entered ihram for, until the Day of Sacrifice came, when he sacrificed and shaved. Then he considered that he had completed his circumambulation for both the Hajj and the Umrah, along with his first circumambulation. Then he said: This is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did it.
