al-Walid told us, Sa'id ibn Abd al-Aziz told us, from Sulayman ibn Musa, from Nafi', the freed servant of Ibn Umar: that Ibn Umar heard the sound of a shepherd's pipe, so he put his fingers in his ears and turned his mount away from the road, saying: "O Nafi', can you still hear it?" I would say: "Yes," and he would continue, until I said: "No." Then he took down his hands and brought his mount back to the road, and said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, hear the sound of a shepherd's pipe and do just as this."
