Waki' narrated to us, Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, from Abu al-Safar. He said: A man from Quraysh broke the tooth of a man from the Ansar, so the Ansari sought justice from Mu'awiyah. The Qurashi said: "This man broke my tooth." Mu'awiyah said: "No, we will satisfy him." But when the Ansari persisted, Mu'awiyah said: "Deal with your companion as you wish." Abu al-Darda' was sitting there and said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'No Muslim is afflicted with something in his body and then gives it in charity (pardons it) except that Allah raises him by a degree and removes a sin from him thereby.'" The Ansari said: "Did you yourself hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" He said: "Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it" - meaning, so the Ansari pardoned him.
