Ja'far ibn Awn narrated to us: Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Amrah, from A'ishah, who said: "Barirah came to me seeking my help with her contract of manumission. I said to her: 'If your masters wish, I will pay them your price in a single payment and free you.' So she consulted her masters, and they said: 'No, unless you stipulate for us the right of wala' (patronage).' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Buy her, for wala' belongs only to the one who frees [the slave].'"
