Hashim told us: Muhammad — meaning Ibn Rashid — told us, from Yahya ibn Yahya al-Ghassani, who said: I came to Madinah and met Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm, who was the governor of Madinah. He said: A thief was brought to me, so my maternal aunt Amrah bint Abd al-Rahman sent word to me: "Do not be hasty in the matter of this man until I come to you and tell you what I heard from A'isha concerning the matter of the thief." He said: So she came to me and told me that she had heard A'isha say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Cut off the hand for a quarter of a dinar, and do not cut it off for less than that." And a quarter of a dinar at that time was three dirhams, the dinar being twelve dirhams. He said: And his theft was less than a quarter of a dinar, so I did not cut off his hand.
