Muhammad bin Ja'far and Bahz narrated to us, they said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Ibn Abi Rafi, from Abu Rafi, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a man of Banu Makhzum to collect the charity (zakat), and he said to Abu Rafi: Accompany me so that you may get a share of it. He said: No, not until I go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and ask him. So he went to the Prophet and asked him, and he said: Charity is not lawful for us, and the freed slave of a people is reckoned as one of them.
