Abd ar-Razzaq told us: Dawud ibn Qays as-San'ani informed us: Abdullah ibn Wahb told me, from his father: Fannaj told me, who said: I used to work in ad-Daynabadh and cultivate there. Ya'la ibn Umayya came as governor over Yemen, and men from among the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came with him. A man among those who came with him came to me while I was in the crop field directing the water into the crop, and he had walnuts in his sleeve, and he sat on a water channel breaking those walnuts and eating them. Then he beckoned to Fannaj and said, "O Persian, come here." I drew near to him, and the man said to Fannaj, "Will you guarantee me, and plant some of these walnuts by this water?" Fannaj said to him, "What benefit is that to me?" The man said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say - with these two ears of mine - Whoever plants a tree and patiently tends and cares for it until it bears fruit will have, for every single thing consumed from its fruit, a charity recorded for him with Allah. Fannaj said to him, "Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He said, "Yes." [Fannaj said], "Yes" [i.e., agreeing]. So Fannaj said, "Then I will guarantee it" - and from that came the walnuts of ad-Daynabadh.
