Yazid told us: Sufyan - meaning Ibn Husayn - told us, from al-Hakam, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from Abu Dharr, who said: I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on a donkey with a saddle-cloth or a blanket on it. He said: That was at sunset. He said to me: "O Abu Dharr, do you know where this sun sets?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "It sets in a murky spring; it goes until it falls down prostrate before its Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, beneath the Throne. When the time for it to emerge comes, Allah permits it, and it comes out and rises. But when He wishes to make it rise from where it sets, He will hold it back, and it will say: 'O Lord, my journey is far.' And He will say to it: 'Rise from where you set.' That is when faith will not benefit a soul that did not believe before."
