He said: I read this hadith to my father and he confirmed it. Mahdi ibn Ja'far ar-Ramli narrated to me: Damrah narrated to me, from Abu Zur'ah as-Saybani, from Qanbar, the chamberlain of Mu'awiyah, who said: Abu Dharr used to speak harshly to Mu'awiyah. He complained about him to Ubadah ibn as-Samit, Abu ad-Darda', Amr ibn al-As, and Umm Haram, saying: "You have been companions as he was a companion, and you have seen as he saw; so if you see fit, speak to him." Then he sent for Abu Dharr, who came, and they spoke to him. He said: "As for you, Abu al-Walid" -- [addressing Ubadah] -- "you embraced Islam before me, and you have seniority and merit over me, and I would have preferred you above attending a gathering like this. As for you, Abu ad-Darda', the death of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, nearly passed you by [before you embraced Islam], then you embraced Islam and became one of the righteous Muslims. As for you, Amr ibn al-As, you fought alongside the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. As for you, Umm Haram, you are but a woman, and your intellect is that of a woman. And as for you [Mu'awiyah], that is that." Ubadah said: "Without doubt, I shall never again sit in a gathering like this."
