Abdullah told us, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami told me, Umar ibn Ali told us, from Abu Janab, from Abdullah ibn Isa, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, Ubayy ibn Ka'b told me, who said: I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when a Bedouin came and said: "O Prophet of Allah, I have a brother who is in pain." He said: "What is his pain?" He said: "He has madness." He said: "Bring him to me." So he placed him before him, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge for him with the Opening of the Book, four verses from the beginning of Surat al-Baqara, these two verses: "And your God is one God," and the Verse of the Throne, three verses from the end of Surat al-Baqara, a verse from Al 'Imran: "Allah bears witness that there is no god but He," a verse from al-A'raf: "Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth," the end of Surat al-Mu'minun: "So exalted is Allah, the True Sovereign," a verse from Surat al-Jinn: "And that exalted is the majesty of our Lord," ten verses from the beginning of al-Saffat, three verses from the end of Surat al-Hashr, and "Say, He is Allah, One," and the two protective surahs. The man then stood up as if he had never complained at all.
