Waki' told me, Qurra told us, from Humayd ibn Hilal al-'Adawi, from a man among them called Khalid ibn 'Umayr -- Abu Nu'ama said: I heard it from Khalid ibn 'Umayr -- he said: 'Utba ibn Ghazwan delivered a sermon to us -- Abu Nu'ama said "on the pulpit," which Qurra did not say -- and he said: "Behold, this world has announced its departure and has turned away swiftly, and nothing remains of it except a residue like the residue at the bottom of a vessel. You are in an abode from which you are moving on, so move on with the best of what is at hand for you. I have indeed seen myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, with no food to eat except the leaves of trees, until the corners of our mouths became sore." Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: I heard my father say, "No one narrated this hadith except Waki'," meaning that it is unusual. Isma'il told us, Ayyub told us, from Humayd ibn Hilal, from a man -- Ayyub said, I think it was Khalid ibn 'Umayr -- who said: I heard 'Utba ibn Ghazwan delivering a sermon -- and he mentioned the hadith -- he said: "I have indeed seen myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him" -- or he said, "among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him -- with no food except the trees," or he said, "the leaves of the trees, until the corners of our mouths became sore." My father said: this Abu Nu'ama is 'Amr ibn 'Isa; and Abu Nu'ama al-Sa'di is another, older than this one, and this one is older than that one.
