'Abd al-Samad narrated to us: Hammad — meaning Ibn Salama — narrated to us: 'Ali b. Zayd narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakra, who said: I went with my father as a delegate to Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan, and we were brought in to see him. He said: "O Abu Bakra, tell me something you heard from the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him." He said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, used to be delighted by a good vision and would ask about it. One day the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Which of you has seen a vision?" A man said: "I have, O Messenger of God. I saw as if a scale was lowered from the sky, and you were weighed against Abu Bakr, and you outweighed Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him. Then Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him, was weighed against 'Umar, may God be pleased with him, and Abu Bakr outweighed 'Umar. Then 'Umar was weighed against 'Uthman, may God, the Exalted, be pleased with him, and 'Umar outweighed 'Uthman, may God be pleased with them all. Then the scale was lifted up." The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was troubled by this and said: "A caliphate of prophethood; then God, Blessed and Exalted, grants sovereignty to whom He wills." My father said — 'Affan said in it: "he was troubled by it" — he said, and Hammad said: "and it grieved him."
