Affan narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, Abu Qaza'a al-Bahili informed us, from Hakim ibn Mu'awiya, from his father, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I did not come to you until I had sworn, by the number of these fingers of mine" - Affan showed us, joining his two palms together - "not to come to you. So by the One who sent you with the truth, what is it that He sent you with?" He said, "Islam." I said, "What is Islam?" He said, "That your heart submit to Allah the Exalted, that you turn your face toward Allah the Exalted, that you perform the prescribed prayer, and that you pay the obligatory zakat - two brothers, helpers of one another. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not accept the repentance of anyone who associates partners with Him after his Islam." I said, "What is the right of one of our wives over him?" He said, "That you feed her when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, do not strike the face, do not revile her, and do not forsake her except within the house." He said, "You will be gathered here" - and he gestured with his hand toward Syria - "walking and riding, and you will be presented before Allah the Exalted upon your faces, with a plug upon your mouths, and the first part of one of you to speak clearly will be his thigh." And he said, "There is no client who comes to a patron of his and asks him for surplus he has, and he refuses him, except that Allah the Exalted will turn him into a serpent that gnaws at him before judgment is passed" - Affan said, meaning by "patron" his paternal cousin. He also said: "There was a man among those before you whom Allah the Exalted had granted abundant wealth and children, until an age passed and another came. When death approached him, he said to his son, 'What kind of father was I to you?' They said, 'The best of fathers.' He said, 'Will you obey me, or else I will take my wealth back from you? See to it that when I die, you burn me until I am reduced to ashes, then crush me with a pestle'" - and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) moved his hands near his knees. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So they did, by Allah" - and the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand like this - "'then scatter me on a windy day, so that perhaps I may elude Allah the Exalted'" - this is how Affan related it; my father said that Muhanna Abu Shibl narrated from Hammad, "that I may elude Allah" - "So they did that, by Allah, and there he was, standing in the grasp of Allah the Exalted, who said, 'O son of Adam, what led you to do what you did?' He said, 'Fear of You.' He said: So Allah made amends for him because of that."
