Abu Nu'aym told us: Badr ibn Uthman, freedman of the family of Uthman, told us: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa told me, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: A questioner came to him asking about the times of prayer, and he did not answer him anything, but ordered Bilal, who gave the call to prayer for Fajr when dawn broke, while the people could hardly recognize one another. Then he ordered him, and he gave the call for Dhuhr when the sun had passed its zenith, while a speaker would say "has midday passed or not?" though he knew better than them. Then he ordered him, and he gave the call for Asr while the sun was still high. Then he ordered him, and he gave the call for Maghrib when the sun had set. Then he ordered him, and he gave the call for Isha when the twilight had disappeared. Then the next day he delayed Fajr until he finished it while a speaker would say "the sun has risen or nearly so." And he delayed Dhuhr until it was close to the time of Asr the day before. Then he delayed Asr until he finished it while a speaker would say "the sun has reddened." Then he delayed Maghrib until it was near the disappearance of the twilight. And he delayed Isha until it was the end of the first third of the night. Then he called the questioner and said, "The time is between these two."
