Affan told us, from Abu Awana: Ziyad ibn 'Ilaqa told us, who said: I heard Jarir ibn Abdullah stand and deliver a sermon on the day al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba died. He said, "Hold fast to fearing Allah, Mighty and Majestic, alone, and to dignity and tranquility, until a governor comes to you, for he is coming to you now." Then he said, "Intercede [seek forgiveness] for your governor, for he loved to pardon." And he said, "As for what follows: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, 'I pledge allegiance to you upon Islam.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'And I stipulate sincere counsel for every Muslim.' So I pledged allegiance to him upon this - and by the Lord of this mosque, I am indeed sincere in advice to all of you." Then he sought forgiveness and came down.
