حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ غَزِيَّةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أُمِّهِ فَاطِمَةَ ابْنَةِ حُسَيْنٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّهَا كَانَتْ تَقُولُ كَانَ أُسَيْدُ بْنُ حُضَيْرٍ مِنْ أَفَاضِلِ النَّاسِ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ لَوْ أَنِّي أَكُونُ كَمَا أَكُونُ عَلَى أَحْوَالٍ ثَلَاثٍ مِنْ أَحْوَالِي لَكُنْتُ حِينَ أَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَحِينَ أَسْمَعُهُ يُقْرَأُ وَإِذَا سَمِعْتُ خُطْبَةَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَإِذَا شَهِدْتُ جِنَازَةً وَمَا شَهِدْتُ جِنَازَةً قَطُّ فَحَدَّثْتُ نَفْسِي بِسِوَى مَا هُوَ مَفْعُولٌ بِهَا وَمَا هِيَ صَائِرَةٌ إِلَيْهِ.

'Ali ibn Ishaq told us: 'Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak told us: Yahya ibn Ayyub informed us, from 'Umarah ibn Ghaziyyah, from Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, from his mother Fatimah bint Husayn, from 'A'ishah, that she used to say: Usayd ibn Hudayr was among the most excellent of people, and he used to say, "If only I were always as I am in three of my states, I would be so: when I recite the Qur'an, and when I hear it being recited, and when I hear the sermon of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when I attend a funeral." And he never attended a funeral without occupying his mind with nothing but what would be done to the deceased and what she would come to.
