Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik Abu al-Walid told us, Abu Awanah told us, from Abd al-Malik, from Warrad, the scribe of al-Mughirah, from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, who said: Sa'd ibn Ubadah said, "If I saw a man with my wife, I would strike him with the sword, edge-on, without turning it flat." This reached the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, "Do you wonder at Sa'd's jealousy? By God, I am more jealous than he, and God is more jealous than I. Because of God's jealousy He has forbidden indecent acts, both open and hidden. No one is more jealous than God, and no one loves an excuse more than God — for that reason He sent the messengers as bringers of good news and warners. And no one loves praise more than God — for that reason God promised Paradise." Ubaydullah al-Qawariri told us, Abu Awanah told us, with his chain, the same. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Ubaydullah al-Qawariri said, "No hadith is harder on the Jahmiyyah than this hadith, his saying, 'No one loves praise more than God, mighty and majestic.'"
