He said: Makki ibn Ibrahim narrated to me, who said: Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd narrated to us, from Salamah ibn al-Akwa', that he told him, saying: I went out from Madinah heading toward al-Ghabah, and when I was at the pass of al-Ghabah, a servant boy of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf met me. I said: "Woe to you, what is wrong?" He said: "The milk-camels of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, have been taken." I said: "Who took them?" He said: "Ghatafan and Fazarah." He said: So I cried out three cries that were heard by everyone between its two lava tracts: "O disaster this morning! O disaster this morning!" Then I rushed on until I caught up with them, and they had already taken them. He said: So I began shooting arrows at them, saying: "I am Ibn al-Akwa', and today is a day of reckoning!" He said: So I rescued the camels from them before they could drink. Then I came, driving them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, met me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people are thirsty, and I hurried them along before they could drink, so go after them." He said: "O Ibn al-Akwa', now that you have prevailed, be lenient; indeed, they are being hosted among their own people."
