Abd al-Razzaq told us, Sufyan informed us, from Ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, who said: A bedouin came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and pledged allegiance to him upon Islam. Then he came the next day feverish and said: "O Messenger of Allah, release me from my pledge," but he refused. He came for three consecutive days, each time saying: "O Messenger of Allah, release me from my pledge," and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, refused. When he turned away, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Madinah is like the bellows of a furnace: it expels its impurities and refines its purity."
