Yahya ibn Adam told us, Ibn al-Mubarak told us, from Husayn ibn Ali, he said: Wahb ibn Kaysan told me, from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari, that Gabriel came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "Rise and pray it." So he prayed the noon prayer when the sun had passed its zenith. Then he came to him for the afternoon prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed it when the shadow of everything was equal to it — or he said, "when its shadow became equal to it." Then he came to him for the sunset prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed it when the sun had set. Then he came to him for the night prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed it when twilight had disappeared. Then he came to him for the dawn prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed it when dawn broke — or he said, "when dawn shone." Then he came to him the next day for the noon prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed the noon prayer when the shadow of everything was equal to it. Then he came to him for the afternoon prayer and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed it when the shadow of everything was twice its length. Then he came to him for the sunset prayer at one fixed time, which did not vary. Then he came to him for the night prayer when half the night had passed — or he said a third of the night — and he prayed the night prayer. Then he came to him for the dawn prayer when it was very bright and said: "Rise and pray it," so he prayed the dawn prayer. Then he said: "What is between these two times is the valid time."
