Yahya told us: Ja'far told us: my father told me, who said: We came to Jabir ibn Abdullah while he was among Banu Salimah and asked him about the Hajj of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He related to us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then it was announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would perform Hajj that year. So a great many people came down to Madinah, all seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and to do as he did. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out with ten days remaining in Dhu al-Qa'dah, and we went out with him until he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah. Asma bint Umays gave birth there to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, and she sent to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asking, "What shall I do?" He said: "Perform ghusl, then bind yourself with a cloth, and enter ihram." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, set out, and when his mount had risen with him upon al-Bayda, he pronounced the talbiyah in pure monotheism: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk; inna al-hamda wa-l-ni'mata laka wa-l-mulk, la sharika lak." And the people pronounced the talbiyah, and some added phrases such as "dhu al-ma'arij" and similar words, while the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, listened and said nothing to them. I looked as far as my eye could see, and before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, were riders and walkers, and behind him likewise, and to his right likewise, and to his left likewise. Jabir said: And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was among us, and the Qur'an was descending upon him, and he knew its interpretation, and whatever he did, we did. We set out intending nothing but the Hajj, until we came to the Ka'bah. The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, touched the Black Stone, then walked briskly for three circuits and walked normally for four, until when he finished he went to the Station of Ibrahim and prayed two rak'ahs behind it, then recited: "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer." My father said: Abu Abdullah - meaning Ja'far - said: he recited in them Surat al-Ikhlas and Surat al-Kafirun. Then he touched the Stone again and went out to al-Safa, then recited: "Indeed al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." Then he said: "We begin with what Allah began with." He climbed upon al-Safa until he could see the House, and said the takbir, saying: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner; His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is over all things capable. There is no god but Allah alone; He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." Then he supplicated, then returned to these words again, then descended, and when his feet reached the valley he walked briskly, and when he ascended he walked normally, until he came to al-Marwah, where he climbed and looked at the House and said upon it as he had said upon al-Safa. When it was the seventh time, at al-Marwah, he said: "O people, if I had known beforehand what I later came to know, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, and I would have made it an Umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal with him, let him exit ihram and make it an Umrah." So all the people exited ihram. Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'shum, who was at the foot of al-Marwah, said: "O Messenger of Allah, is this for our year only, or forever?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, interlaced his fingers and said: "Forever," three times, then said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." He said: And Ali arrived from Yemen bringing sacrificial animals, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had brought sacrificial animals with him from Madinah. And there was Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, who had exited ihram, had put on dyed clothing, and had applied kohl. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, objected to that regarding her, but she said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded me to do so." Ali said this while in Kufah - Ja'far said, my father said: this statement was not mentioned by Jabir - I went, feeling provoked, to seek a ruling from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding what Fatimah had mentioned. I said: "Fatimah has put on dyed clothing and applied kohl, saying that my father commanded her to do so." He said: "She has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth, she has spoken the truth - I commanded her to do so." Jabir said: And he said to Ali: "For what did you enter ihram?" He said: I said: "O Allah, I enter ihram for what Your Messenger entered ihram." He said: "And I have the sacrificial animal with me." He said: "Then do not exit ihram." He said: So the total number of sacrificial animals that Ali, may Allah, the Exalted, be pleased with him, brought from Yemen, together with what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, brought, was one hundred. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand, then gave the rest to Ali, who slaughtered what remained, and he shared him in his sacrificial animals. Then he ordered that a piece from every camel be taken and put in a pot, and they ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I have slaughtered here, but all of Mina is a place of slaughter." And he stood at Arafah and said: "I have stood here, but all of Arafah is a place of standing." And he stood at Muzdalifah and said: "I have stood here, but all of Muzdalifah is a place of standing."
